Sizing Furniture: Table Height

I’ve given seating size good coverage recently, so now I’ll delve into tables.

Dining tables seem to be the most common project that aspiring woodworkers try (or want to try with the most enthusiasm). The height of these pieces is very uniform – 30 inches. You probably see variances of up to an inch either shorter or taller, but most often you find 30 inches is right on the money. That’s the target height for my large table projects

Other table types are where you’ll see larger variances in height.

Coffee tables can run from 12 inches to 20 inches, but often are comfortable for most folks around 15 or 16 inches. I usually aim at 15 inches.

End, side tables, and night stands range from 20 to 26 inches, but if you’re building one to match a specific couch, chair, or bed, you’ll need to gauge the size that will work with the existing furniture. I like between 22 and 24 inches.

Accent, or catch-all tables, many times are sized at the same height as dining tables. If it’s meant to be more of a display piece you’ll see one a bit higher. The lowest I’d design one would be at 24 inches.
